Birthstones were originally chosen to represent each of the 12 calendar months and have changed over time depending on the cultural beliefs of evolving civilizations. Birthstone jewelry contains stones which represent the month of our birth. In the Birthstone Chart below, the first stone listed for each month is the traditional birthstone which dates back to the 15th century. The second stone listed shows the more modern birthstones which have been accepted by the National Association of Jewelers since the early 1900's.
